As a powerful interdisciplinary approach, social network analysis provides an efficient tool for examining communication structures and patterns in different societies, including scientific societies. This article introduces the basic concepts, history, and nature of social network analysis, and then describes the macro and micro indicators of this analysis. Next, the application and importance of social network analysis in the study of researchers’ scientific co-authorship networks will be focused on. This analysis allows for the identification of hidden collaboration patterns, identification of key researchers and institutions, assessment of knowledge flow, and measurement of the coherence and development of scientific networks. Also, the methodology of co-authorship network analysis and common software in this field are reviewed. The ultimate goal of this article is to provide a comprehensive view of the potential of social network analysis for strategic research planning and scientific capacity development.
