Smart agriculture is an agricultural management system using modern information and communication technologies that allows farmers to make appropriate decisions and leads to sustainable improvement of productivity. However, the adoption of smart agriculture technologies by small-scale farmers who play an important role in sustainability of agriculture and food security is one of the challenges for developing smart agriculture. In this article, the benefits and challenges of smart agriculture for small-scale farmers are described. The cost-effective smart agriculture technologies for small-scale farmers are then introduced and practical recommendations are presented. The small-scale farmers can become part of the transformation of the agricultural model from conventional to smart using the cost-effective smart agriculture technologies and help feed the growing population while their life and livelihood will improve.
